Ubisoft’s latest game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has officially launched with a review embargo lifted, flooding gaming websites with reviews. As of this writing, it boasts an 82 metascore on PS5, 84 on Xbox, and 77 on PC.
While not exceptional, the score is in line with what fans would expect from a big Ubisoft game. Historical performance data shows that only the highest-rated games have consistently outsold others in the franchise, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey being the most successful release to date.
Shadows aims to revitalize the series by introducing samurai and ninja gameplay mechanics, albeit with a more streamlined experience compared to previous installments like Valhalla. The inclusion of two protagonists with contrasting playstyles offers an intriguing dynamic, but critics seem underwhelmed by the game’s overall quality.
The mixed reception is partly due to the success of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, which has raised expectations for this new Assassin’s Creed installment. Whether Shadows will exceed Ubisoft’s sales expectations remains to be seen, as the company has faced significant financial challenges in recent years.
