Ubisoft’s latest game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has received a “very positive” rating on Steam based on 751 user reviews, with 80% of them being positive. The game, set in rural Japan, was launched four hours after its initial release on the platform and has since been ranked first on Steam’s top-selling games globally.
The game’s success comes as Ubisoft faces falling revenue, a sinking stock price, and takeover speculation. However, the company’s shares have seen an upward trend of 3.4% following the positive review. The game was also well-received on Sony’s PlayStation Store, with a user rating of 4.79 stars out of five.
On Metacritic, the PC version scored 78 points based on 45 critic reviews, while the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions received 81 and 85 points respectively. Critics praised the game’s beautiful graphics, detailed environment, and gameplay.
Despite some negative reviews mentioning errors and crashes at launch, players generally enjoyed the story and described the game as “better than expected”. However, some felt that the game was overshadowed by Sucker Punch Productions’ critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.
The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows may pose a challenge for Ubisoft ahead of its own competitor, Sucker Punch Productions’ upcoming game set in feudal Japan, Ghost of Yotei.
