Asteroid 2024 PT5, estimated to be about 33 feet wide, is set to make a close pass near Earth next month. Confirmed by NASA in October, this asteroid was first observed in August by the Sutherland, South Africa telescope of the University of Hawai’i’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). Scientists believe it may be a large chunk of rock ejected from the Moon’s surface after an ancient asteroid impact.
Despite initial concerns, NASA assures that 2024 PT5 “does not pose a hazard to Earth.” Instead, the agency plans to track the asteroid with planetary radar during its close pass in January 2025. The asteroid will remain a distant companion to our planet for several months, approximately nine times farther from Earth than the moon, and won’t be captured by the Earth’s gravity.
