Astronomers are urging nations to ban “obtrusive space advertising” visible from the ground, as it interferes with quiet skies and astronomical observations. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) recently called for a global ban on such ads, which are defined by U.S. federal law as any visible space advertising without telescopes. While the U.S. already prohibits launching missions carrying ads, concerns grow that other nations might begin using obtrusive space advertising. John Barentine of Dark Sky Consulting highlighted these fears, noting the commercial appeal and potential for companies in other countries to act. Despite no immediate efforts reported, Russian companies like Avant Space have demonstrated such technology. Meanwhile, StartRocket’s past attempt with PepsiCo was nixed after testing, though they later withdrew due to concerns. The AAS has called for an international convention or law to ban this practice, and Barentine advocates for U.S. support to push for global norms against it.
