NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has released a stunning new view of the “Christmas tree cluster” NGC 2264, combining data from its X-ray observations with optical images from astrophotographer Michael Clow. The resulting image showcases the vibrant colors of young stars, swirling gas, and light in the visible spectrum.
Located approximately 2,500 light-years from Earth, NGC 2264 is a gathering of youthful stars aged between one and five million years old. These celestial bodies are depicted as bright blue and white lights set against swirly clouds of gas – an evocative visual representation likened to pine needles.
The new image features vibrant colors with Chandra data in red, purple, blue, and white hues, while optical data appears in green and violet shades. This groundbreaking research offers a unique glimpse into the life cycle of young stars within this remarkable cluster.
