Jose Altuve will primarily play left field this season, according to Houston manager Joe Espada. The nine-time All-Star has played mostly second base throughout his 1,767-game major league career. Although he won the Gold Glove in 2015 and led the American League with the fewest errors in 2020, Altuve will now take on a new role.
The decision to move Altuve to left field was initially considered when Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox. Without Bregman, the team might have kept Isaac Paredes at second base and had Altuve play outfield. However, since that scenario did not occur, the Astros are now relying on Altuve to contribute in a different position.
