Asus has announced the XG Mobile, a portable docking station that promises to be one of the most powerful single-cable solutions available. The device uses Thunderbolt 5 technology and is equipped with Nvidia’s top-flight GeForce RTX 5090 mobile chip, providing up to 140 watts of power and supporting two monitors, a USB hub, SD-card reading, and 5Gbps Ethernet.
The XG Mobile boasts the world’s first Thunderbolt 5 external graphics card and one of the first Thunderbolt 5 docks. It achieves this through an 80 gigabit per second bidirectional link, enabling users to perform multiple tasks with a single cable. The device is also standards-based, making it compatible with any Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 laptop or handheld.
While not the most powerful eGPU available, the XG Mobile offers significant advantages over previous Asus models. Its Thunderbolt 5 link provides up to 64Gbps of bandwidth, outperforming previous options like USB4 and Oculink. The device weighs under 2.2 pounds and features a fold-out kickstand, making it an ideal portable solution.
The XG Mobile will be available in two versions: a top-tier model priced at $2199.99 with the RTX 5090 chip, and a lower-end version priced at $1,199.99 with the mobile RTX 5070 Ti. Users who require compact power and don’t prioritize maximum performance can opt for the latter.
The XG Mobile is set to arrive in Q1 and will be compatible with any Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 laptop or handheld. However, users may need a Thunderbolt 5-enabled device to fully utilize its capabilities.
