Atari is entering the handheld gaming market with its new device, the Gamestation Go. The device is a joint venture between Atari and My Arcade, featuring three unique control schemes: Trak-ball, Paddle, and Keypad. These additional control options open up possibilities for game compatibility, particularly with classic arcade titles.
The Gamestation Go supports iconic games like Centipede, Missile Command, Breakout, Codebreaker, and Star Raiders. Intellivision games are also included in the lineup, and Jaguar games may follow suit. However, the device’s limited horsepower means it will not support modern games.
A 16:9 display seems out of place given the Gamestation Go’s retro gaming focus. The question remains whether it will run a Linux OS like the Atari VCS or if players can emulate non-Atari console games.
An early prototype, initially called “Gamestation Portable,” was unveiled at CES 2024 with a $149 price tag for Q4 2024 launch. However, the Gamestation Go is the final version and will be showcased in more detail next week. A firm launch window and price have yet to be announced, but Atari plans to share more information at CES 2025.
