AT&T has reached a $177 million settlement related to two data breaches in 2024, offering customers cash payments up to $7,500 each. The company faced lawsuits over the breaches, which affected millions of customers.
Here’s what happened: In March and July 2024, AT&T announced investigations into two separate data leaks that compromised customer information. One breach included Social Security numbers from 2019, while the other exposed telephone numbers of most AT&T cellular customers between May 1 and October 31, 2022.
The settlement includes a $149 million cash fund for the first breach and a $28 million payout for the second breach. Eligible customers will receive an email notice to file a claim, with a deadline of November 18.
Customers affected by either or both breaches are eligible for claims. The payment amounts vary: up to $5,000 for the March incident, up to $2,500 for the July incident, and up to $7,500 for those impacted by both. Some customers may receive an additional tier-based payment, but there’s no guarantee of a substantial payout.
AT&T denies allegations of responsibility for the breaches but has agreed to settle to avoid protracted litigation. The company expects the settlement to be approved by year-end and remains committed to protecting customer data.
