Aubrey Plaza Honors Late Husband Jeff Baena with Tie-Dye Tribute at SNL50

Actress Aubrey Plaza paid tribute to her late husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, during the NBC’s SNL50: The Anniversary Special. On February 16, Plaza introduced musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard, wearing a tie-dye shirt that held sentimental value to their relationship.

Baena, who passed away in January 2025, was known for his unconventional approach to marriage, including choosing non-traditional attire for their wedding. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2021, Plaza revealed that Baena got into tie-dyeing during the COVID-19 quarantine and made her a custom tie-dye pajama set.

The couple’s relationship was marked by their ability to balance their personal and professional lives. Despite the challenges they faced, Plaza described their connection as “extreme highs and extreme complications.” Baena, who passed away at the age of 51, was a writer and director with credits including I Heart Huckabees, Life After Beth, and Horse Girl.

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office ruled Baena’s death a suicide. His family released a statement on January 6, expressing their gratitude for support during this difficult time. Plaza’s tribute to Baena was a heartfelt nod to their relationship and his enduring legacy in the film industry.
