Aubrey Plaza, 40, and her husband Jeff Baena, 47, were separated months before his death according to a medical examiner’s report. The couple had a tumultuous relationship leading up to Baena’s death on January 3. A month after their separation in September 2024, Baena made “concerning remarks” that prompted Plaza to call a friend for a welfare check.
Baena was going to therapy following the welfare check, with documents showing recent marital difficulties between him and Plaza. The writer-director died by suicide. Plaza last spoke to Baena on January 3 at 10:36 a.m. ET before his body was discovered by a dogwalker.
Following the news of his death, Plaza described it as an “unimaginable tragedy.” The couple had been together since 2011 and tied the knot in May 2021. Baena had over a dozen directing credits to his name, including writing and directing Life After Beth with Plaza, whom he met on set.
The actress expressed her love for Baena in interviews, stating that their careers as independent artists allowed them to maintain a balance in their relationship. However, she also acknowledged the challenges of being apart.
