Actress Aubrey Plaza made a statement during the recent New York Liberty vs Minnesota Lynx game, wearing a custom “Philly is a Women’s Sports Town” T-shirt that has become a top seller. The Watch Party PHL organization, founded by Jen Leary, a Philadelphia firefighter, aims to support women’s sports fans and promote the city’s new WNBA team set to launch in 2030.
Leary created the T-shirts last month, coinciding with news of Philadelphia’s new WNBA team. The shirt’s popularity skyrocketed when Plaza was spotted wearing it during the game, thanks to Leary’s organization. A percentage of the shirts’ sales will fund Watch Party PHL’s meeting space project.
The shirt features a basketball as a stand-in for the letter O in women’s and is printed by Philadelphia-based company Go Hamm. Plaza, who is an avid women’s sports fan herself, wore the T-shirt during a meeting with her sister Natalie at Rival Bros. Coffee Roasters. The two are Wilmington natives and share a love for women’s sports.
The shirt has become a sensation, with fans eagerly purchasing it online to show their support for Philadelphia’s new WNBA team and women’s sports in general. Watch Party PHL’s efforts have brought the community together, making the city a hub for women’s sports enthusiasts.
