Auburn University has announced that it will recognize seven additional national championships, bringing its total to nine. The new titles are based on polls or services that awarded the championship to each Auburn squad. The additions include championships from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004.
College football fans took to social media to react to the news, with some expressing support for Auburn’s claim and others poking fun at the idea of retroactive recognition. “Good, if Bama can recognize the 1933 Betty Crocker Cookbook poll, then we should be able to claim a few more as well,” wrote one fan.
Not everyone was convinced, however. “Yes that’s how championships were crowned in football back then, but don’t you think there’s a timetable to recognize such things?” asked another fan.
Auburn fans defended their team’s claims, with some arguing that the championships should be recognized despite the passage of time. “I’m Bama to the bone and this doesn’t bother me at all,” said one fan.
The announcement brings Auburn’s total national championship count to nine, which is still lower than Alabama’s record 18 claimed by ESPN. However, many Auburn fans feel that their team’s claims are legitimate, particularly those from 1958, 1983, and 2004.
