Auburn basketball star Tahaad Pettiford was arrested in Alabama early Saturday morning, but was released from jail later that day after posting bail. Pettiford, a 19-year-old guard, had previously withdrawn his name from the NBA draft to return to college basketball.
Pettiford’s decision to leave the draft came after he received feedback from NBA teams and saw an opportunity for growth in college. He was a key player for Auburn during their successful NCAA tournament run, averaging 15.2 points per game. His teammates are now counting on him as they move forward without another top talent, Johni Broome, who was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Coach Bruce Pearl acknowledged the situation and vowed to handle it internally with Pettiford and his family. “We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward,” he said.
