Auburn Recognizes Multiple National Champions in Football History

Auburn University has taken a cue from its Iron Bowl rival Alabama by recognizing seven more of its football teams as national champions. This move marks a change of heart for the Tigers, who previously only recognized their 1957 and 2010 teams as national champs.

The decision is attributed to athletic director John Cohen, who states that Auburn will now align with the well-established standards used by the NCAA’s official record book and its peers across the nation. The Associated Press first started crowning a champion in 1936, while the Coaches Poll began in 1950.

Auburn will recognize teams from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004 as national champions, with five of those teams finishing their seasons unbeaten. Notably, the 1913, 1983, and 1993 teams are listed in the NCAA record book as having been named national champion by an NCAA-recognized selector.

The move also comes as Auburn prepares to retire Cam Newton’s jersey number, No. 2, on October 11 against Georgia. This marks the fourth player in Auburn history with a retired jersey number, joining Terry Beasley and Heisman winners Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson.
