Auburn Stuns Alabama as No. 1 Tigers Win 94-85

In a historic matchup, top-ranked Auburn defeated second-ranked Alabama 94-85, marking the first time a No. 1 team has beaten a No. 2 team from AP rankings since 1988. The win improves Auburn’s record to 23-2 and 11-1 in the conference.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl credited his team’s early scoring as key to their victory on the road. “You’ve got to play well early if you’re going to win on the road,” he said. Auburn scored the first nine points, set the tone for the game, and never trailed again.

Forward Johni Broome led the charge with 19 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a steal. His performance solidified his case for player of the year despite missing two games due to injury. Broome controlled the game from start to finish, securing his double-double with just under 17 minutes left.

The Crimson Tide rallied to tie the score but ultimately fell short. Coach Nate Oats praised his team’s effort, saying they played hard and didn’t turn over the ball much. However, Alabama struggled from three-point range, making just five of its 26 attempts.

The win marks Auburn’s ninth victory against AP-ranked teams this season. The Tigers’ next matchup could come in the SEC tournament or NCAA tournament, where a rematch with Alabama is also possible on March 8. For now, Auburn will look to build momentum and regain control of their destiny as conference leaders.
