French director Jacques Audiard took home the top prize at the 37th European Film Awards, winning four awards for his film “Emilia Pérez,” including best film, director, screenwriter, and actress. The award ceremony was held in Lucerne, Switzerland.
“Emilia Pérez” beat out several other films, including “The Room Next Door,” “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” and documentaries such as “Bye Bye Tiberias” and “Dahomey.” Audiard’s win marks a notable achievement in his career, solidifying his position as one of Europe’s most acclaimed filmmakers.
Audiard also won awards for his screenplay and the actress who played the lead role, Karla Sofía Gascón. The European Discovery Award went to director Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel for his first feature film “Armand.” The best documentary award was given to “No Other Land,” directed by Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra, and Hamdan Ballal.
Other notable winners included Gints Zilbalodis for the animated film “Flow” and Benjamin Kračun for European Cinematography. Isabella Rossellini received the European Achievement in World Cinema Award, while Wim Wenders was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
