Aurora Borealis Sighting Forecast for Northern US States

The Aurora Borealis is back, and may be visible throughout the weekend. According to the University of Alaska and NOAA, 15 northern US states are forecast to have the finest views by this weekend. These states include North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) tracks auroras using the Kp-index, a global auroral activity indicator that measures fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field. The Kp index is expected to peak at 4.67 during the weekend, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.

The Aurora Borealis occurs when the planet’s magnetic field interacts with solar winds, creating an invisible barrier around the Earth. When this barrier is disturbed, gorgeous auroras are produced. While rare, the display can be visible over Europe and the US during large auroral events.

If weather conditions are clear, many northern states should be able to see the Northern Lights this weekend. Check NOAA’s 3-day forecast for the most up-to-date timing breakdowns.
