Australia staged an incredible comeback to beat England in the first round of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, marking the highest-ever chase by any team at an ICC white-ball tournament.
Josh Inglis made history with his maiden ODI century, scoring 120 runs off 86 deliveries as he led Australia’s charge from the middle overs. The match saw a dramatic turn of events, with England’s Ben Duckett breaking records with his third ODI ton and highest-ever total in ICC Champions Trophy history.
However, Duckett’s impressive form was not enough to prevent Australia from scripting a remarkable win. Despite early losses, including that of star batters Travis Head and Steve Smith, Matthew Short and Marnus Labushchagne helped bring the team back into the game with 95 runs for the third wicket.
England responded strongly, but Inglis remained focused, combining with Alex Carey to forge a 146-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Glenn Maxwell’s quickfire cameo of 31 off 14 deliveries proved crucial in keeping the scoreboard ticking as Australia made a fierce comeback.
The match saw several other notable performances from England, including Ben Duckett’s 165 not out and Jofra Archer’s 21 runs off 10 deliveries. However, Inglis’s impressive century was enough to seal the win for Australia, marking a historic victory in the process.
