Australia Floods Claim Four Lives, Leave Thousands Displaced

Record rainfall has caused major flooding in New South Wales (NSW), leaving 50,000 people isolated by floodwaters. At least four people have died and several are missing, with hundreds of rescue calls answered by emergency services.

The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, visited flood-hit areas and stated that “extreme weather events” are becoming more frequent and intense. He thanked emergency responders for their efforts, saying they’ve shown the best of Australian character.

Over 535 rescues were conducted in the past 24 hours, with 150 flood warnings issued, including 40 at an emergency level. More than 100 schools have been closed due to the floods, leaving thousands without power.

Taree has been severely affected, with flooding surpassing a record for its highest level. Authorities have confirmed four deaths, including a man who drove into floodwaters near Coffs Harbour and another whose body was found in Moto, near Taree.

Nearly 10,000 homes are at risk of flooding on the Mid North Coast, and NSW Premier Chris Minns warned that supplies are difficult to reach isolated communities. The state government has pledged support from the federal government, with Minister for Emergency Services saying they’re doing everything possible to aid rescue operations.
