Australia Selects Japan’s Improved Mogami-Class Frigate Design

Australia has selected Japan’s improved Mogami-class frigate design for its future fleet of general-purpose frigates, in a deal that strengthens ties between the two US Indo-Pacific allies and marks Japan’s first major defense export. The Australian Defence Department announced the selection after a rigorous tender process.

Under the $10 billion program, Australia will acquire 11 frigates, with the first three ships built in Japan and the remaining eight constructed in Western Australia. The Japanese design was chosen for its ability to meet capability requirements and strategic needs of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The deal also includes agreements between the Australian government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ shipyard.

The RAN will receive 11 frigates, with production starting in 2029. The ships will feature improved capabilities, including increased vertical launch systems for air-defense missiles. This deal marks a significant moment in Australia-Japan relations, reflecting their strategic alignment on defense issues.

For Japan, the Mogami-class is its first major arms export since World War II. The country plans to acquire a total of 12 frigates, with production switching to the improved design in 2028.
