Rory Callum Sykes, a British-born Australian actor who was born blind and with cerebral palsy, has died at the age of 32 due to carbon monoxide poisoning from the Palisades Fire. His mother, Shelley Sykes, said her son lived in a guest house on their Malibu canyon property, but she was unable to evacuate him due to limited phone connectivity and resources.
Sykes had starred in the British television show “Kiddy Kapers” and served as a motivational speaker, also co-founding the Happy Charity organization with his mother. He wrote a book about overcoming his challenges, titled “Callum’s Cure.”
Shelley Sykes reported that her son told her to leave him, but she was unable to move him due to her own injuries. She drove to a local fire station for help but was met with the devastating news that there was no water available.
The Palisades Fire has burned over 23,700 acres and is 11% contained, while the Eaton Fire in Altadena has burned over 14,100 acres and is 27% contained. Five fatalities have been reported in the Palisades Fire, including Sykes’ death.
