The Australian Army has taken a significant step forward in its air and missile defence capabilities during Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025. The 16th Regiment’s National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS) successfully fired two AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, hitting a simulated cruise missile threat several kilometres away.
The NASAMS system, deployed in the remote Bradshaw Field Training Area in the Northern Territory, is part of Australia’s integrated air and missile defence network. This network includes ships, fighter aircraft, and surface-to-air missiles designed to protect the country from airborne threats.
Gunner Seth Allen, a member of 111 Battery, described the live-fire exercise as an “honour” and praised the thrill of being close to a live fire. The NASAMS system has now conducted its third successful live fire, following previous tests using the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile.
Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, which took place from July 13 to August 4, is Australia’s largest bilateral exercise with the US, involving over 40,000 military personnel across several locations in Queensland, Western Australia, and Papua New Guinea.
