Two Australian healthcare workers are being investigated for making antisemitic threats on camera, claiming they had previously killed Jews in their care. The pair, who said they were doctors, used the Chatroulette platform to speak with an Israeli man who revealed his nationality, prompting a heated exchange.
The conversation escalated when the woman threatened to kill him and refused to treat him if he came to her hospital. A video of the exchange was posted online, showing the woman saying “it’s Palentine’s country, not your country you piece of s—“. The Israeli man asked for peace, but the conversation quickly turned hostile.
The healthcare workers were identified as staff at Bankstown Hospital and have been “stood down” by NSW authorities. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirmed that the pair will face a criminal investigation, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemning their actions as “vile”.
The incident is part of a growing trend of antisemitic incidents in Australia, with more than 2,000 reported since October 2023. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) has warned that hospitals are not safe for Jewish patients, citing a lack of consequences for perpetrators.
In response to the rising tide of hate crimes, Australia enacted a new hate crimes bill in 2024, imposing minimum mandatory penalties for certain offenses. However, critics argue that more needs to be done to address the issue, with ECAJ CEO Alexander Ryvchin saying “antisemitism has sadly taken root in Australia and we need to expunge it root and branch”.
