Seven people, including four Australian women, were hospitalised in Fiji after drinking cocktails at a resort popular with tourists. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Warwick Resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast, where guests consumed pina coladas before falling ill.
According to reports, the patients suffered nausea, vomiting, and “neurological symptoms”. Two Australian women, Tanya and Georgia, were among those hospitalised, and they have since been discharged. However, their family members reported that they experienced severe symptoms, including seizures and tremors.
Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka has described the incident as “very serious” but insisted it was an isolated case. He attributed the incident to a possible contamination of drinks with methanol or other toxic substances.
Australian officials have been assisting two families affected by the incident, and travel warnings for Fiji have been updated to highlight the risks of drink spiking and methanol poisoning. The government has assured tourists that it is taking steps to investigate the incident and prevent similar cases in the future.
