A mass shooting at a high school in Graz, Austria, on Tuesday killed 10 people, including teenagers, in one of the country’s worst rampages. The victims included children between 14 and 18 years old, with six females and three males among them.
Twelve students were injured, some seriously, but one adult died on Tuesday evening. The suspect, a 21-year-old Austrian male who had attended the school but not graduated, used two weapons – a shotgun and pistol – to carry out the killings before fatally shooting himself in a bathroom.
Police believe he acted alone, obtained the guns legally, and there is no known motive for the attack. Officers seized the weapons and are conducting forensic examinations and interviews.
The country is in shock, with Chancellor Christian Stocker announcing three days of national mourning. Other European leaders, including French President Jean-Noël Barrot and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have expressed condolences and horror at the incident.
Austria’s gun ownership laws are among the highest in Europe, but gun violence is rare in the country. However, high-profile violent incidents have occurred in recent years, highlighting the need for vigilance and action to prevent such tragedies.
