Austria’s southern city of Villach was left shaken after a fatal stabbing attack that killed a 14-year-old boy and injured six others. Authorities believe the suspect, a 23-year-old Syrian, acted alone and had possible connections to the Islamic State group.
The attack occurred on Saturday afternoon in the center of Villach, close to the main square. Police say the suspect used a folding knife and was arrested after the incident. Those wounded were two 15-year-old boys and men aged 28, 32, and 36.
Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner described the attack as an “Islamist attack with an IS connection.” He also praised a local resident who drove towards the suspect and helped prevent the situation from escalating further.
The incident has reignited debate on migration and asylum policies in Austria. Far-right leader Herbert Kickl called for stricter controls, citing his party’s need to oversee the Interior Ministry. The topic has become increasingly contentious ahead of February’s national elections.
In recent years, Austria has experienced several deadly attacks linked to extremist groups. Authorities have responded with increased security measures, including police presence at public events and a mass screening program.
The victims’ families and communities have expressed shock and grief over the attack, with many calling for stricter laws and policies to address extremism.
