Avian Flu Cases in New York Confirm Outbreak’s Return

Two cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were confirmed in bird populations in New York this month, according to state officials. The outbreaks were detected in Suffolk and Putnam counties. Health authorities are monitoring individuals who may have come into contact with infected poultry for potential symptoms.

The virus has been circulating among birds for decades but began spreading significantly in March. The CDC reported 67 confirmed U.S. cases this year, including one human fatality. While the public health risk remains low, state Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald urged residents to remain vigilant and wear protective gear when interacting with livestock or wild birds.

Last week, a wild goose in Brewster tested positive for HPAI, and a second case was confirmed at a poultry farm in Suffolk County on Long Island. The farm reported culling tens of thousands of birds due to the outbreak. State agriculture and environmental officials are urging poultry farms to strengthen biosecurity measures, such as early testing, to prevent further spread.

The DEC advised residents to report unusual wildlife deaths and emphasized avoiding direct contact with sick or dead wild birds or animals. State health departments are closely monitoring exposed individuals and providing farmworkers with PPE to reduce transmission risks. Officials are also working with dairy farms to address the situation, ensuring continued agricultural productivity while mitigating the disease’s impact.
