Avian Flu Detected in Idaho Dairy Cattle, 977 Detections Nationwide

The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed an H5N1 avian flu detection in Idaho dairy cattle. This is the state’s first case since October. The origin of the finding remains unclear, but it’s not yet known if the virus is linked to a bulk milk detection or from illness symptoms.

Nationwide, APHIS has reported 977 H5N1 detections in dairy cattle from 17 states. Additionally, seven more confirmations have been found in domestic cats, including three from Washington and two from Oregon. A pet food maker was recalled after an investigation linked the deaths to the product.

Furthermore, APHIS reports more H5N1 detections in poultry from New York and Wyoming. Two live bird markets and a backyard flock were affected.
