A six-animal avian flu outbreak has hit the Wildlife World Zoo in Litchfield, Ariz., killing five animals and infecting employees. The infected animals include a mountain lion, cheetah, kookaburra, swamphen, Andean goose, and white tiger.
According to Kristy Hayden, president of the zoo, the swift response and robust biosecurity protocols helped limit the outbreak’s impact. However, 25 employees were exposed to the infected animals, prompting monitoring for symptoms.
The avian flu primarily affects birds, with human infections considered rare. People who are infected may experience mild or severe symptoms. The Maricopa County Public Health Department advises basic hygiene practices and seasonal flu/COVID-19 vaccines to reduce the risk of illness.
Hayden reported that she took precautions after learning of other Arizona cases but ultimately was unable to prevent infection in this instance. The zoo has started disinfecting enclosures, restricting access, and quarantining exposed animals to contain the situation.
As of Dec. 12, no employees have tested positive for avian flu. This is Maricopa County’s second outbreak, with the first affecting a commercial poultry backyard flock. No people in Maricopa County have been infected, but two individuals in Pinal County recovered from exposure.
