A large egg theft occurred Saturday at an organic supplier’s warehouse in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Approximately 100,000 eggs worth $40,000 were stolen from a distribution trailer around 8:40 p.m. The incident is linked to the ongoing avian flu outbreak that has driven up egg prices by 36.8% nationwide since last year.
The US Consumer Price Index reports a dozen large eggs now costs around $4.69 at some grocery stores in central Pennsylvania, with inventory varying between brands and types. The avian influenza, caused by the H5N1 virus, started an epidemic in 2022, killing millions of birds worldwide.
As of publication, there are no live cases of poultry affected in Pennsylvania. State police have asked anyone with information about the theft to contact the Chambersburg barracks at 717-264-5161.
