Avian Flu Outbreaks on Rise in US, Global Response Enhanced

The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has reported four more H5N1 avian flu detections in dairy cattle, bringing the national total to 1,009 cases across 17 states since March 2024. The virus has also been detected in poultry flocks in California, Idaho, New York, and New Mexico.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidance on surveillance for human H5N1 infections, aiming to rapidly detect and characterize cases to guide global flu pandemic preparedness. Countries must notify the WHO within 24 hours of any lab-confirmed human case involving a new subtype, according to International Health Regulations.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has also announced $15.3 million in funding for research projects to enhance preparedness and response to diseases affecting US livestock. The funding supports 68 projects led by state agriculture departments, universities, and federal partners, with a focus on enhanced biosecurity measures.
