The US is facing an egg shortage due to the spread of avian influenza. According to the USDA, over 12,000 wild birds tested positive for the virus nationwide since January 2022. H-E-B, a San Antonio-based grocer, says it’s working to mitigate the effects on egg prices.
While H-E-B remains in good supply of eggs, representatives admit that avian flu will “temporarily tighten” availability and impact prices. To ease costs, the store aims to keep prices as affordable as possible.
The average price of a dozen large grade-A eggs has increased from $2.52 in January 2024 to $4.95 in January 2025, according to the US Labor Statistics. H-E-B’s eggs now cost $5.68 per dozen, while Walmart and Kroger offer similar prices at $5.46 and $4.29 respectively.
