AWS appears to be scaling back its DevOps service, closing CodeCommit source code repository service and Cloud9 cloud IDE to new customers without prior announcement or formal documentation. Users discovered the changes by trying to create a CodeCommit repository, which returned an error message stating that onboarding new customers ceased on June 6, 2024.
AWS will not introduce new features to CodeCommit except for security and availability updates. The company suggests migrating repositories to alternative services like GitLab or GitHub. AWS has also discontinued S3 Select, CloudSearch, SimpleDB, Forecast, Data Pipeline, and Amplify.
The lack of transparency and notification has caused concern among users, who feel that they should have been informed about the changes before discovering them by accident. The FAQ still explains how to set up a new CodeCommit repository, but this information may become obsolete soon.
In related news, AWS recommends migrating from Cloud9 to IDE toolkits like JetBrains IntelliJ or Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio. Developers want to work with AWS resources within their preferred IDE to streamline workflows and leverage familiar tools.
The signs suggest that AWS is no longer aiming to provide a complete DevOps solution but instead focuses on integrating with popular third-party services. While this may be beneficial, developers would prefer advance notice and updated documentation rather than discovering changes through low-key forum posts.
