AWS US-EAST-1 Region Experiences Widespread Outage Again

Amazon Web Services’ US-EAST-1 region is experiencing issues with multiple services, including EC2 and container services like Elastic Container Service (ECS). The problem started on October 28, causing increased latencies for launching EC2 instances. Amazon throttled some requests to resolve the issue, but customers may still see delays.

The outage also affected EMR Serverless services, which is used to run big data tools like Hadoop and Spark. ECS was impacted, with some clusters operating in the affected region. Amazon is working to refresh warm pools of healthy clusters and recover impacted ECS cells, but progress is not yet visible externally.

No information has been provided about the cause of the incident, but it highlights the fragility of internal dependencies in AWS services. The outage impacts ten services, including EC2, ECS, Fargate, and Glue, but may not be a full outage due to the region’s six availability zones. Amazon has since resolved the issue.

Initially, service disruptions were reported for some customers using App Runner, Batch, CodeBuild, and other services. However, reports of disruptions have since stopped. The cause of the incident remains unknown, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring AWS services and their interdependencies.
