Baby Blue Hot Spring Discovered in Yellowstone’s Norris Geyser Basin

Scientists have announced the discovery of a new thermal feature, a 13-foot baby blue hot spring, in Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin. The USGS reports that the pool emerged sometime around Christmas and was first spotted in April.

According to Poland, a geologist with the USGS, the formation of this new hot spring was subtle, occurring via a small explosion without much noise or material release. In contrast, another recent hydrothermal explosion at Porcelain Terrace was significantly louder and more intense.

The baby blue pool is 13 feet in diameter and filled with warm water around 109 degrees, showing signs of a classic hot spring. Its color comes from high amounts of dissolved silica. Geologists are closely monitoring the pool’s behavior to understand its dynamics and how it may change over time.

Recent hydrothermal explosions have been a significant concern for Yellowstone scientists, including a recent event at Black Diamond Pool in Biscuit Basin. The basin has continued to exhibit intense scientific scrutiny since the massive explosion last July.
