Five years after public promises to boost diversity, equity, and inclusion, some corporations are renegeing on their commitments without making progress. The NAACP warns that the reversal of these efforts harms Black communities and erodes economic opportunities.
Major corporations like Delta Airlines, Apple, and Ben & Jerry’s have reaffirmed their dedication to DEI initiatives, while others, such as McDonald’s, Meta, and Walmart, have rolled back or abandoned these efforts altogether.
The rollbacks harm Black communities by eliminating diversity roles, reducing supplier diversity, declining community investments, shifting away from equitable hiring practices, and reinforcing historical barriers to progress under the guise of “meritocracy.” It is essential for individuals and corporations to hold accountable those who abandon DEI commitments, while supporting businesses that prioritize people over profit.
The NAACP encourages consumers to spend their money wisely by prioritizing Black-owned businesses, demanding accountability from companies, advocating for policy changes, staying informed about corporate rollbacks, and promoting the Power of Black Dollars. By doing so, individuals can help drive progress toward creating an equitable economy for all.
