Owen McDonnell’s chilling performances as Ian Reilly in ‘True Detective: Night Country’ and ‘Bad Sisters’ have left audiences hooked. But did the serial killer survive again?
In 2024, Irish actor Owen McDonnell took on two roles that showcased his versatility as a talented actor. First, he played Raymond Clark, a Native American scientist who was part of a cold case in HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.” Later, McDonnell portrayed Ian Reilly in Season 2 of AppleTV+’s ‘Bad Sisters,’ a black comedy series about the Garvey sisters.
As the season progressed, Ian’s sinister character revealed himself to be even more despicable than his predecessor, John Paul. The seemingly soulful Ian worked his way into the hearts of the five Dublin-based Garvey sisters before being exposed as Cormac Sweeney, a disgraced and abusive former police officer.
In a shocking finale episode titled “Cliffhanger,” Ian was thrown off a cliff and left for dead by the angry Garvey sisters. However, McDonnell’s character miraculously survived and made his way to the hospital. Despite being silenced from filing charges against the family, Ian will likely stay out of their lives.
In an interview with USA TODAY, McDonnell discussed his role in “True Detective: Night Country” and ‘Bad Sisters.’ He expressed relief that his character did not die off-screen but instead got a chance for redemption at the hospital. With his next acting project still under wraps, McDonnell seems to be looking forward to taking on new challenges after playing characters with dark pasts.
For now, fans of “Bad Sisters” will have to wonder what’s next for Ian Reilly and the Garvey sisters. Will they face another serial killer like Ian? Only time will tell.
