BAFTA Awards: David Tennant Roasts Donald Trump

The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony in London saw U.S. President Donald Trump receive a lighthearted roasting from host David Tennant. During the opening monologue, Tennant praised “The Brutalist” as an incredible film with bold architecture, except for one notable exception: Trump’s hairstyle.

Trump claimed he hadn’t seen “The Apprentice,” citing its British film rating and lack of availability on Nickelodeon. Tennant jokingly compared himself to Beetlejuice, saying he had summoned the president. The crowd erupted in laughter as Tennant continued with a joke about villains.

At the ceremony, “Conclave” directed by Edward Berger topped the nominations list with 12 nods, followed by Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” and Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.” Irish hip-hop biopic maker Rich Peppiatt also made history by tying the record for most nominations for a debut filmmaker.

Unfortunately, Karla Sofía Gascón, the first trans actor to be nominated for an Oscar, was phased out of her awards campaign after controversy surrounding her past social media posts surfaced. Despite apologizing, tensions remain between Gascón and Netflix, hindering the film’s Oscar hopes.
