Balatro, a poker-themed roguelite game, has successfully appealed the PEGI rating decision that initially classified it as suitable only for players aged 18 and above. As a result, the game’s age rating has been revised to PEGI 12, allowing players aged 12 and up to play.
The change in classification comes after the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) organisation acknowledged that the game did not contain sufficient gambling imagery or materials that would instruct players on how to gamble. The Complaints Board concluded that while the game explains poker hands, it also incorporates fantastical elements that justify a PEGI 12 rating.
This revised classification decision is part of an effort by the PEGI Experts Group to develop more granular criteria for handling gambling themes and simulation in games. The updated guidelines will include age categories such as 12, while maintaining the existing PEGI 18 rating for games that simulate casino or betting hall activities.
The game’s popularity has surged since its release on mobile last year, with sales exceeding 5 million copies sold – more than double the amount since August. Balatro’s multiple wins at last year’s The Game Awards have contributed to its increased visibility and success.
