Baldur’s Gate 3 Review Bombed After Swen Vincke Speech

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received an influx of negative reviews since The Game Awards, where Larian Studios’ head Swen Vincke criticized corporate greed in the gaming industry. Over 500 reviews have been left with the majority being from Chinese gamers who are upset over Vincke’s comments on sales and support.

Vincke claimed that the next year’s Game of the Year winner would be a studio that “didn’t have to meet arbitrary sales targets” and “didn’t treat their developers like numbers on a spreadsheet.” This sparked backlash, with some believing he declared that sales don’t matter. However, Chinese gamers were also upset due to reports of a dodgy translation of Vincke’s speech.

Some believe the review bombing was motivated by disappointment over Black Myth: Wukong not winning Game of the Year or Astro Bot’s lack of availability on Steam. Despite this, it appears the review bomb has failed, as positive reviews far exceed negative ones. The backlash highlights the challenges of coordinating a large-scale online attack and underscores Vincke’s message about the industry’s focus on profit over developer support.
