A mass shooting at a food market in Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market on Monday left five people dead. The suspect, who took his own life, was identified as Thai and had disputes with security guards before the attack.
Four of those killed were security guards, while the fifth victim worked at the market. Two others were injured by gunfire. Police say the shooting is unrelated to Thailand’s ongoing conflict with Cambodia.
The Or Tor Kor market sells mostly fresh fruit and seafood, a common sight in Bangkok’s markets. Gun ownership rates in Thailand are relatively high for the region, but mass shootings remain rare. The country has seen several deadly incidents in recent years, including a 2023 shooting at a luxury shopping mall that killed two people and injured five others.
Thailand’s past violence includes an ex-policeman who killed 37 people, mostly children, in a gun and knife attack at a childcare centre in 2022. A soldier killed 29 people and injured dozens more in Nakhon Ratchasima city in 2020.
