A Bangladesh national, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad (30), was arrested by police on Sunday for allegedly stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan at his residence on January 16. The police are interrogating Shehzad to determine if there is an “international conspiracy” behind the attack.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Shehzad was unaware he was breaking into a Bollywood star’s home and intended to steal, not harm the actor. A court has remanded Shehzad in five-day police custody due to concerns about an international connection.
The breakthrough came when police identified Shehzad at a labor camp in Thane after receiving information from a labor contractor. Multiple teams analyzed CCTV footage and questioned two lookalike suspects before locating the real attacker.
Shehzad, who entered India illegally from Bangladesh and changed his name to Vijay Das, had been seen near Dadar railway station multiple times before entering Khan’s apartment. The police found hundreds of CCTV footage showing Shehzad visiting a labor contractor in the area.
However, defense lawyer Sandeep D Sherkhane claims that Shehzad has resided in India for years, holds vital documents, and his family also lives there.
