A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, was arrested by the Mumbai police on Sunday for stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident occurred at the Satguru Sharan building in Bandra, where Mr. Khan (54) was stabbed multiple times and underwent a five-hour surgery.
According to police officials, the accused had entered Mr. Khan’s home with the intention of theft, but the plan backfired after he was attacked. The police found evidence that led them to suspect Shehzad, including CCTV footage showing him walking towards the Bandra railway station around 7 a.m., wearing new clothes.
Shehzad, who has worked in a pub in Worli, had stayed on the premises the night before the attack and approached a labour contractor for work. The labour contractor provided his mobile number to the police, which showed he had made online transactions while on the run.
The accused is currently being held in five-day police custody after a court ruled that it was unclear whether an international conspiracy existed. Shehzad has been charged with multiple crimes, including robbery and house-breaking, under Indian law.
