Mattel, Inc. has announced the debut of a new Barbie doll featuring type 1 diabetes (T1D), marking an important step towards inclusivity and representation for children living with the condition. The doll, which is designed to accurately reflect the medical equipment and treatment associated with T1D, will be available on Mattel Shop and at retailers nationwide.
In partnership with Breakthrough T1D, a leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization, Barbie worked closely to ensure the doll’s design captures the community. The new doll features a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) on its arm, an insulin pump attached to its waist, and a stylish blue polka dot outfit that represents diabetes awareness.
Barbie has also donated dolls to the Breakthrough T1D 2025 Children’s Congress, which brings together 170 children living with type 1 diabetes from across the US and internationally. The organization has honored two global role models and type 1 diabetes advocates, Robin Arzón and Lila Moss, with their own one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls.
“This partnership means the world to us,” said Aaron J. Kowalski, CEO of Breakthrough T1D. “We’re thrilled to work with a brand that shares our commitment to showing children that a life with type 1 diabetes can be full and empowering.”
The introduction of this new doll marks an important step towards increasing awareness and representation for children living with T1D. By featuring the doll in its popular Fashionistas line, Barbie aims to inspire young girls to see themselves reflected in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, the 2025 Barbie Fashionistas dolls feature a minimum of 50% ISCC-Certified bio-circular plastic.
