Irish actor Barry Keoghan has spoken out against the “inhumane” online trolling that has been directed at him, accusing people of intimidating his family. In a statement published on X, Keoghan said he can no longer sit idly by and allow the trolls to distract from his personal life and work.
Keoghan, who is known for his Oscar-nominated role in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” has faced criticism over his past, including growing up in foster care and having a mother addicted to heroin. Critics have also targeted him as a father to his 2-year-old son Brando.
In his statement, Keoghan described the messages he received as “absolute lies” and “disgusting commentary” about his appearance, character, and parenting. He said that people had been intimidating his family members, including visiting their home and knocking on their door.
Keoghan has previously spoken about the impact of online trolling in an interview with The Louis Theroux Podcast. He expressed frustration with those who make judgments about him as a parent, saying they have no idea what it’s like to grow up without a blueprint.
He also spoke about the trolls who comment on his appearance on social media platforms like TikTok, saying people can be cruel and make hurtful comments about his looks. Keoghan emphasized that he will continue to protect his family from online abuse, but was fed up with being targeted by those who seem to take pleasure in causing him harm.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the impact of online trolling on individuals and families.
