Two men from Rochester, New York, have died after using bat poop as fertilizer for their cannabis garden. The men, aged 59 and 64, inhaled spores of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum released by the bat droppings, leading to severe lung infections known as histoplasmosis.
The fungal infection was contracted while using bat poop purchased online or found in attics during significant bat infestations. Despite treatment with antifungal medication, both men succumbed to the disease. Bat feces are often preferred by cannabis growers due to their high nitrogen and phosphorus content.
