Bats Spotted with Rabies in Quincy, Illinois Area

Bats are more active during this time of year, and local health experts are warning about the risk of rabies exposure. In the past two months, three bats from Adams County have tested positive for rabies.

Rabies is a deadly disease that affects the nervous system. It can be transmitted through bites, scratches, or even saliva. Because bat teeth are small, it’s possible to be bitten or scratched without feeling it.

If you’ve been exposed to rabies, seek treatment immediately. Even if you’re asleep or no one saw the contact, report any bat presence in the room and have the bat tested. Do not touch, hit, or destroy a bat; instead, call Animal Control at (217) 277-2145 to collect it.

To prevent the spread of rabies, the Adams County Health Department has given the following tips:
