Bay State Residents Face Sky-High Utility Bills Amid Frigid Winter

Massachusetts residents are facing a “sticker shock” of epic proportions with skyrocketing utility bills that have left many feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. The recent increase in delivery charges has caused prices to soar, leaving families struggling to make ends meet.

According to Elijah DeSousa, organizer of the Facebook group “Citizens Against Eversource,” many residents are being forced to choose between paying their energy bills or buying groceries. Comments on his group’s page reveal that some households have seen their bills double in just a year, with the majority of the cost coming from delivery rates.

State regulators have approved double-digit increases in electric and gas delivery rates, which officials claim are necessary to fund state-mandated energy programs, including Mass Save. However, critics argue that these policies are driving up costs for consumers and that lawmakers and the administration need to take action.

Democratic Gov. Maura Healey has announced plans to file legislation aimed at providing discounts, cutting inefficient programs, and removing government red tape. State Attorney General Andrea Campbell has also submitted comments calling for relief for consumers. The state Department of Public Utilities has demanded a 5% cut in residential gas bills starting next month, but some customers remain skeptical.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Bay State residents need help. It’s up to lawmakers, regulators, and officials to take action and provide relief from these exorbitant utility bills.
