Bayern Munich have effectively ruled out signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, despite being linked to the German star in a potential blockbuster transfer. According to reports, Liverpool FC are on the verge of completing a record-breaking deal worth up to €150M for Wirtz’s services.
The news comes as Bayern Munich are reeling from the loss of another key player, with winger Leroy Sané having left the club. The Bavarians are now looking to address their wing shortage, but Eberl made it clear that they can no longer compete with Liverpool in terms of transfer fee.
“I don’t know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying for Wirtz,” said Bayern board member Max Eberl. “Florian is an outstanding player, and we could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens.”
The comments came as part of a discussion on potential transfer targets, with Athletic Club winger Nico Williams being mentioned. However, Eberl declined to comment further, stating that there are many other players in the market.
Bayern Munich will now look to fill their wing shortage elsewhere, but it remains to be seen how they will cope without another key player. With Wirtz potentially off the table and Sané departed, the Bavarians face an uphill battle to keep up with Liverpool FC’s pursuit of the highly-regarded midfielder.
